To cope well is to respond to the threat in ways that minimize its negative impact and to learn how to accept the current state of affairs around us. Learning to alter expectations during this time has proven to be difficult for many Americans, not just retirees, but it is a crucial part of pushing forward. As circumstances spin out of our control, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by fear and negative emotions. Feelings of frustration and confusion have arisen due to the sudden loss of connection with friends, family, and our expectations for this year. Members who may have spent years envisioning the freedom of their retirement are learning to adapt to a new normal. Though retirement is usually a time to relieve stress, our retirees have realized that this year has turned into something less ideal and more disappointing.
